The full moon is exact on Tue 24 Nov at 9:54 AM ET (2° Gemini). Look up on Monday 23 or Tuesday 24 November, whichever evening is clear.

A supermoon, simply nearer

The moon is near its closest to Earth, so it looks a little larger and brighter. The same moon, simply nearer. Tonight it is about 360,754 km from Earth. The term “supermoon” comes from astrologer Richard Nolle (1979), for a full moon at 90% or more of its closest approach. This one passes it at about 97%.

Why it is called the Beaver Moon

The Old Farmer’s Almanac popularised the name for November’s full moon, tying it to the season beavers prepare for winter. The same gesture lives in many calendars: the Chinese lunar calendar names months by the season’s work, and Japan keeps tsukimi, the autumn moon-viewing. A name says what the season asks of us.

A 15-minute full moon ritual

1. Prepare (2 min). Find a window or step outside where you can see the moon.
2. Arrive (3 min). The double sigh: two breaths in through the nose, one long breath out through the mouth. Five minutes of this lifted mood in a 2023 trial (Balban et al.).
3. Look (3 min). Just look at the moon. In one study, people who took short walks looking for something vast felt more joy and warmth toward others (Sturm et al.).
